William & Watson Divinia (Craighead) Love
Alfred Alfson
Margaret and her boyfriend, Albert aka Alfred Alfson, were both killed in the Iroquois Theatre Fire on December 30, 1903.
"The bodies of Alfred Alfson and Miss Margaret Love were not recovered until Thursday and Friday respectively. A vest to a suit of clothes which he wore in the hands of his aged father, Charles Alfson, was the only means of identification in Alfson's case, as his body was so badly burned he could not be recognized. The body of Miss Love, however, was uninjured. There was not one single disfiguring mark on it, Death to her was easier, undoubtedly, as it is presumed she died from inhalation of the deadly fumes and smoke." (Woodstock Sentinel)
Nineteen-year-old Margaret May Love (spelled Marguerite in some reports), nicknamed Maggie, worked as a clerk for Jurene M. Thomas in Woodstock. She was the daughter of Scottish immigrant Watson D. Craighead / Greighead Ronning Love (1853–1930) and Watson's second husband, Irish immigrant William A. Love (1832–1892), a veteran of the American Civil War. Maggie was nine years old when her father died, making her eligible to receive his veteran's pension.
