James Horan was appointed Fire Marshal of Chicago in 1906. He immediately began to renovate the Fire Department. Between 1906 and 1910 many new firehouses were built and Engine 101 through 117; truck 30 through 34 were organized. He was Chief Fire Marshal in December 1910 when he died in the line of duty, along with 20 other firemen, when a wall fell on them killing them all while battling the Union Stockyards fire.
