Leander was sent by his father to visit his aunt in Chicago over the holidays. He and a friend attended the matinee performance of "Bluebeard" at the Iroquois Theatre. When the fire broke out, Leander jumped from the second balcony into a fireman's net. However, he died at Mercy Hospital four hours after being admitted.
