Nellie died from burns she received when a fire broke out while she was attending a performance at the Iroquois Theater in Chicago with her mother, Mary, and her niece, Gracie Dawson. Her mother and niece perished in the fire, while Nellie was able to escape only to pass away in a Chicago hospital nine days later.  See Grace Dawson for more information.
