Margaret was badly burned in the fire.

She was the daughter of Harry Joseph Ricketts and Elizabeth Caroline Bowen, who divorced in December 1894. Her mother married William Cleveland Clingen in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1899. As of the 1900 US Census, Margaret and her older sister, Elizabeth, were living with their maternal grandmother, Mrs. William L. (Elizabeth Shank) Newman of Decatur, Illinois.
