Ettie took her talented little daughter, Natalie to the matinee at the Iroquois theater. The theater caught on fire and was the most horrific fire in Chicago history with a loss of life of over 600 people. Both Ettie and Natalie died in the fire. They had seats in the first balcony and were smothered and crushed. When they were finally identified they were found locked in each other's arms.
